HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO EVERYONE

Would You like to be a CSA Member in 2008

A up Date on Membership to my 2008 CSA
You can copy and paste forms to a e-mail to me if you are interested.
What is a CSA Farm-- Community Supported Agr.
It was started to help the local small farms. Would be costumers pay in the winter for their summer supply of fresh local vegetables, fruits, berries, herbs what ever the farm produces. In paying ahead the farmer had the money when needed most for seed, soil additives, machinery repair and maintenance for the new season.

Also, the farmer can better plan how much to grow and not have a lot of waste of produce that just cost to watch waste in the fields.
Members take the risk with the farmer that some years are better then others for crops you take the risk that not everything will make it or as much as should be. Then there may be some produce that goes crazy so you will get a lot of that crop for that year.
Your membership is non refundable.
The farmer does their best to ensure the members the best - freshest - natural - good supply and variety of produce the whole season. Members also see where their produce is coming from and how it is grown.
There are many ways CSA’s are set up for when, how and what you will get for your membership.

Blooming Patches CSA Basics
I start with heirloom seeds or seedlings all untreated as much organic seed as possible. I do Not use any chemicals on my soil, plants or produce. I don’t even use any organic bought insect killers. I use the method of healthy natural soil makes healthy insect and disease free plants. Also if your soil has everything it needs then your produce will have the nutrition it should have and you need. Not just look good. Taste is also better then.

I test my soil every year to see what it is lacking. Use compost, manures, mulch, natural ground rock/minerals, cover crops to turn in to the soil. Rotate my crops and do some companion planting.
I also raise Chickens for meat and eggs. They get no antibiotics or hormones. They did have to get a fence up as they were invading the neighbors flower beds. But, it is a large area that is grassy. They can go out anytime during the day only closed in at night so nothing eats them.
My CSA General Lay Out
I am taking members now for the year of 2008.
Generally the main season is from June thru Oct. I do have some item year round and if not sold out of have root crops till the first of the year to dig fresh. Have eggs year round just sometimes less then others. Have chicken meat to offer (young tender and slow cook year old hens) three to four times a year.
Your membership can be paid for all at once or in 4 payments. I ask for a $75.00 non refundable deposit with your sign up. Which this year I would like to have all of them in by Dec. 31, 2007 this will let me know if I need to look for more and get set up for ordering seed and supplies. As any discounts have to be ordered and paid for by mid Jan. or end of Jan. Full shares are $300.00 and half Share is $150.00.
Second payment due by Feb. 15, 2008
Full share- $75.00 / Half share- $25.00
Third Payment due by April 1st
Full Share- $75.00/ Half Share- $25.00
Fourth and last Payment (to be paid up in full)
May-15,2008Full Share- $75.00/ Half Share- $25.00
This membership gets you Vegetables, Herbs, Eggs (about 2 Dz. a month), Cut Flowers, Chicken Meat, My Home Made Jellies and Jams when I make them.
SEPARATE I HAVE BERRY SHARES
These are figured at $62.00 each that is figured at 10 Quarts of Strawberries, 4 pints of Red Raspberries, 4 pints of Black Berries.
Also included in that if I have enough as the plants are new and berries, fruit and nut take a year to several years to really produce. Would be Red Currents, Concord Grapes, Elderberries, Black Raspberries.

We do not spray our Berries like most farms so there is no Mold inhibitor on the plant or berry. They will mold faster then those you buy in the store. You have to keep them cold, not piled to thick and use in a day or two at most they are fresh pick every morning. Other wise the best way to keep is to freeze or make into something. You can lay them spread out on a cookie sheet in your freeze once frozen put in a freezer container to store. Then they will stay separate for easy use.
At any time any of the berries that are producing strong and there are extra after everyone’s share has been covered you are welcome to cash purchase more.
A membership for the berries is $62.00
With membership forms a Non refundable deposit of $22.00 (or full payment) by Dec. 31, 2007
Second Payment- by Feb. 15, 2008--$20.00
Last Third Payment- by April 1ST --- $20.00
I will have a ledger for each member and with every time you purchase I will take that from your membership money. I will give you a copy of your ledger so that you may keep track also. I will give you a receipt each time you pick up. (should you use up all your membership money you may if there is extra purchase more product with cash).
There will be two pick up days a week you may come to get your produce, eggs, berries, herbs, cut flowers and meat. At this time pick up days are Sunday and Thursday 11A.M. to 8 P.M.
This year most everyone e-mailed or telephoned in their order a min. of two days ahead. This way if they wanted (pay cash at pick up) items such as Bake goods or cheese That gave me time to have it fresh here also helps with the greens as they are picked the morning of pick up day.
I do not make deliveries to anywhere. I do have members that have made up their own groups to share in coming to the farm. Chagrin Falls had enough people to each only come every 3 to 5 weeks for the group, Kirtland enough to come about once a month, University Ht./ Cleveland Ht. Enough to each come about every 8 weeks. I will pass on your contact information that you give me stating that it can be past on to others that are looking to form a group. It will be up to you members to put your group together. That I do not do as I am not the one whom has to work with the central area for drop, and any thing else that need be figured out.
It is up to me to do my best job at providing members the freshest, most nutritionist, the most quantity, variety, natural produce I can grow and pick for you.
I have a blog (which at times I have a hard time getting on to edit) that I try to keep up dated with what is ready to harvest, getting ready and almost done as well as other farm news that you can check any time.

blooming patches.blogspot.com
You can pre-order or ask for farmers choice which if you let me know how many people you are feeding (family size) I will make you up a box/bag of what ever is ready to pick that week (if there is something on the list you really will not eat let me know so that I don’t include it in your package.).

If you would like to come out to the farm please call first to make sure I am going to be here. I am here 99% of the time but, I don’t want you to come the 1% I am not here.
A little bit about the farm and I.

My Grandparents (my mom’s side) bought this farm in 1944 - it was about a 200 acre farm on the east and west side of Rte. 44. My Grandparents bought over 70 acres of it all on the West side going up to the corner of Rte. 87 and down Bass lake Rd.
When my grandparents bought the farm my great grandfather and great Uncle (on grandma’s side) my great grandmother (on grandpa’s side), my grandparents - my mom and her two brothers (one a new born) and one sister all lived here. The house was not livable so they lived in the granary while the men worked on the house. My grandmother use to stay awake most the night worried the rats might get on the baby at night. The past owners let it run down and didn’t cut the grass leaving huge mounds of garbage outside the house windows. Was no electric or pluming in the house. The men cleaned up, fixed up and put wood burner and cook stove in. Grandpa dynamited a boulder out from under one half of the house putting a basement in. Later putting a coal furnace in. As they got it together they started to move in crowded into a couple rooms. It was ready for plumbing pipe and electric wiring but, they could not get it cause of the war. Was a 2 seater out-house in the back yard till the early 70’s.
My parents bought the farm with the almost 11 acres still with it, in 1971. We have electric and running water but, the huge cherry trees that were lined behind the house were taken by a storm in the 70’s.
Now my parents still own the farm and I have moved back in about 5 years ago and farming. The land is beautiful for farming great water supply, a spring made and feed ravine on the north edge of the land.
The farm house we live in was built in 1810 and was really two houses put together. The granary still stands just my Dad added a couple feet on the front took the wooden floor out raised it a few feet putting a cement floor in. is the same wood beams, siding boards and most of the roof boards. The old dairy barn fell down before I was born just the cement floor and stone walls stand. I did build a small equipment building on the cement.
Me-- I was a coast to coast and Canada Solo Semi Driver for over 18 years. Raised two children. Had several surgeries and worn out body parts from driving. After my last surgery to repair my Elbow my folks asked me if I would stop driving and move in with them maybe try farming. I did, it has not always been easy. But, we have not killed each other and for the most part it is getting better for us all.Goal is to be able to live off of this farm and the farm support it’s self and us. Go to all alternative energy. Keeping with the organic and nutritional rich soil. Help keep the water, land and air a little cleaner here. The city push keeps building more and more on top of us and the people make it harder and harder for us to keep it natural - clean and a farm. Some days I want to give up I get tired of the every day fighting politics at the local - state and federal levels to be able to just keep farming. I believe if we don’t start working at cleaning things up and learning how to live with nature before long there will be no living. People have to get back to doing good clean labor. Cook your own food - learn how and store your own food. Learn the many native natural seasonal foods we have here. Stop depending on foods from all over the country, stop depending on the government to do the right thing for you - your health - your living. Only you can take care of yourself.
We are checking into putting in a windmill this year for our energy. Which would be great it would be our electric, our heat and is clean.

I need a Hoop house and Green House, larger better set-up chicken coupe. With luck it will all come together.
We use the compact florescent light bulbs, I do have Solar electric fence, collect rain water for some watering.
Also, recycle and reuse plastic, glass, paper.
Do reuse here (clean only) egg cartons, paper and plastic bags, boxes, glass food jars. Veg. and Fruit scraps go to the chickens or compost.
Grass clippings, leaves all go for mulch in gardens.
I also do a lot of the work around here by hand that most use machines for.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND INTEREST --- Barb

BLOOMING PATCHES
CSA FARM
This year I am doing the Berry Memberships separate from the Produce.
We have figured on a slow bad year -- so that if we get at least an average production year there will be extra that members will be offered to buy at that time.
Berries are picked Daily and ours are not sprayed with anything so you have to take great care in storing them. Also that means they have got to be picked up same day as picked or I freeze them and you will get them frozen.
Most farms spray their berries with a mold inhibator so that the plants and berries do not mold as fast. Ours are no chemicals so -- you most keep them in your frig. And spread not stacked to deep - if you are planing on keeping them for over a day most 2 days you are taking a great chance of mold. Best if you are to keep more then one day to make something out of them or freeze them. You can spread them on a cookie sheet and put in your freezer let freeze then put in a freezer container to keep frozen. This way the berries stay separated for easyer use.
